NASA "Here. There. Everywhere." Workshop on January 25th

posted Jan 8, 2014, 12:00 PM by Adam Engst

Here. There. Everywhere. is a NASA project that includes a set of six large beautiful posters and fun hands-on activities that demonstrate how basic concepts of physics apply on Earth, in the sky, and throughout the Universe.  For more information about the project, see http://hte.si.edu/

A grant from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics is supporting this project and workshop. The activities are most appropriate for families, or youth in grades 4-8 (but could be adapted for mixed groups that include younger or older kids). They are ideal activities to be taught by older teens and we encourage high-school students to participate in the workshop to learn to lead the activities.

There are two (identical) large kits of activities and posters that can be loaned to trained leaders. The project was originally designed as an exhibit for small science centers and libraries. This would be ideal for a public venue where the posters could be displayed and 4-H members could offer the activities to the public (such as a county fair or a library). It would also make a great afterschool or club project.

At the workshop we will do each of the activities and talk about the science concepts behind them, so you will feel confident to teach others or lead the activities with groups of youth. We are fortunate to have Rick Kline, the Manager of the Spacecraft Planetary Imaging Facility in the Cornell Department of Space Sciences, joining us as an instructor.
